Oldham County 2000 Census Data Fact Sheet

Oldham Ahead is analyzing the 2000 Census Data and drafting a series of Fact Sheets to provide citizens and government leaders some insights, comparisons, and perspectives of the data that might not be available otherwise.  We have included our third fact sheet below.  If you would like copies of the fact sheets in Word Document format, contact us at OldhamAhead@aol.com.

Oldham County 2000 Census Data Fact Sheet # 1

                           April 2, 2001

Purpose:  To provide 2000 Oldham County Census data with comparisons of 1990 Census results as well as comparisons of Oldham County with other Kentucky counties for selected census data.   Some views of the data provide perspectives that may allow stronger county arguments for additional state and federal infrastructure funding as well as aid in county economic development efforts.  The data may also assist in the revision of the county’s comprehensive plan, Outlook 2020.

Data Sources:  Data were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau website (www.census.gov) and the Kentucky  State Data Center website (www.cbpa.louisville.edu/ksdc/).   The State Data Center Program is a cooperative effort among the University of Louisville, the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the U.S. Census Bureau.  Oldham Ahead has extracted Oldham County-unique data and compiled the data into one document for ease of use.  The data reflect the first of several releases over the next few years from the Census Bureau.

Facts:  The initial Census Bureau data for the Commonwealth of Kentucky were released on March 20, 2001.  Oldham County's official 2000 population was 46,178 which represent a 38.8 percent increase over the 1990 county population of 33,263.

Rates of Growth

In terms of percentage growth, Oldham County ranked 5th in the State, although  for counties with a 1990 population of 20,000 or more, Oldham County ranked 2nd behind Boone County, which grew 49.3%.

Under 18 Population in Oldham County

Children under 18 comprise 24.6% of Kentucky’s population.  Children comprise 27.4% of Oldham County’s population, down from 28.6% in 1990.  Oldham County ranks 11th in the State for counties with the highest percentage of children.

The under-18 population in the county grew from 9,529 in 1990 to 12,644 in 2000—a 32.6% increase.  In contrast, the Kentucky under-18 population increased by a net total of only 40,724 the past decade,  an increase of 4.2%.  Oldham County’s percentage of adults is somewhat skewed due to large adult population of inmates incarcerated at the Kentucky State Reformatory.  2000 Census data is not available to factor in that population segment, but the 1990 institutionalized population for the county was 1,910.

For counties with 2000 populations of 30,000 or more, Oldham County ranked only behind Boone, Christian, Nelson, and Hardin Counties for counties with the highest percentage of children.
